Craigard RFC

Founded: 1919 (renamed from Brunstane RFC with a move of venue)

Disbanded: 1937 (renamed back to Brunstane RFC after a move of venue; and merger with Westhall RFC)

Home ground: Murrayfield Polo ground, then Forkenford at Duddingston, Edinburgh. They moved back to Brunstane in 1936 and played a season before changing their name on a merger.

Notes:

The club changed its name from Brunstane after the First World War when they could no longer play at their pitch at Brunstane Road in Joppa. They first moved to Murrayfield polo pitch but when the SRU took the pitch to build a car park for Murrayfield they then moved to Forkenford in Duddingston.

Around 1936 the club found its way back to Brunstane Farm. Still known as Craigard RFC, it wasn’t until the formal merger with Westhall RFC a year later that the new club called itself Brunstane RFC.

From Musselburgh News 6 November 1936: Craigard Club intend running two fifteens this season, so that there are still a number of vacancies for players. Their playing pitch is at Brunstane Farm, and they have the use of a room at the farmhouse for holding meetings and for other purposes. The secretary is Mr T. F. R. Wilson, 12 Belmont Gardens, Edinburgh, 12, to whom intending members should make application. On Saturday they beat Moray House at Prestonfield by a dropped goal (4 points) to 0.

From Musselburgh News 14 May 1937: Craigard R.F.C. are to revert to their old name next season—that of the Brunstane R.F.C. They have now their ground at Brunstane Farm, Joppa, through the kindness of Mr Robert Park, farmer—hence the reason for taking their old name again. They hope to have more than one XV. next season, and there is every possibility of some of the Westhall players joining the club, as it is expected that the Westhall R.F.C. will be wound up. In their “Brunstane” days the club were prominent in junior rugby, and it is hoped that the glories of the old club will be restored with this change of name and venue.

The Craigard club merged with Westhall in 1937. On the merger they changed their name of the new club to Brunstane.
