Ardrossan Football Club

Can you provide any information?

Founded: 1870 (as a rugby club); c. 1874 (as an Association football club)

Disbanded: c.1874 (as a rugby club) c.1876 (as an Association football club)

Home ground: Practice Ground (Clutha Park)

Notes:

The club played its first game on 17 September 1870. They played another side known as Ardrossan Castle Foot-Ball Club. A re-match was held on 1 October 1870. McAusland scored a try for Castle; and Hughes scored a try for Ardrossan. Both conversions were good. Brown scored another try for Castle but the conversion was missed. Finally Shaw scored another try; the conversion must have been good – as the newspaper records that Castle won the match by a goal. (At this early stage of rugby union, only ‘goals’ mattered – so a drop goal, penalty or conversion counted as a ‘goal’. A try at the time only gave you a ‘try for goal’ with the conversion and did not count in the scoring.)

Its is probable that the club switched to Association Football. In 1874 the club was playing association football. That lasted for two years when the club folded.

With their demise, another Association Football Club of the town, Ardrossan Ensign Football Club changed its name to become the second Ardrossan Football Club. http://www.ardrossanfootballclubs.net/Clubs/Ardrossan%201874-76.htm
